For those of you coming in from out of town, here are some travel tips!

Reception/Wedding Site

The reception and the wedding are at the same place, which happens to be South Camp Pendleton!  It’s near Oceanside, right off the I-5. Your car’s driver must have a valid ID to enter the Base.

For those of you unfamiliar with California, this means that it’s in San Diego County.  The closest city is San Diego (of course).  Los Angeles is in driving range, but it’s a daytrip, and with Los Angeles traffic it can be a very looooong daytrip.

Flying In

  • San Diego (SAN) airport is south of the reception hotel, and your best bet for proximity and cheap fares.
  • Santa Ana/Orange County (SNA) is a smaller airport, but also close to the reception hotel.
  • Los Angeles (LAX) is really, really far away and did we mention it’s in Los Angeles?  We do not recommend flying in there unless you absolutely have to or have made prior arrangements with family in the area.

  • The South Mesa Lodge is a hotel right next to the reception site.  Right now you can’t book rooms, but if enough of you stay there we can get a group rate.  Steph will be looking into this!

Things to Do and See

There’s a lot to do and see in San Diego County!  Here’s a sampling.

  • Balboa Park – An awesome collection of architecture and museums.
  • San Diego Safari Park – Formerly the “Wild Animal Park”.  Lots of fun!
  • San Diego Zoo - World famous!
  • Legoland - For the little ones and Lego enthusiasts (but really targeted at the wee bairns).
  • Coronado Island - If you’re going to Balboa, you may also want to check out Coronado Island.
  • Catalina Island - Never been there, but we hear it’s fun!  Providing you don’t get seasick.
  • Hornblower Cruises - Day cruises around San Diego!
  • Beaches – Our favorite is San Clemente…but then, we may be biased.  San Clemente is also a fun place to just walk around.  Del Mar street is a personal favorite for window shopping and good food.

There are also casinos; Steph’s Mima likes Pala.

And of course, if you want to head up into Los Angeles and north Orange County, there’s also Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Knott’s Berry Farm!
